The word Nerodia is likely derived from greek mythology (the sea nymph Nereis). The word rhombifer simply refers to the diamond shapes from which it derives its name of diamond-backed.

Description:

Like many other species of watersnakes, the juvenile diamond-backs have a similar pattern to the adult, but it is more defined with obvious markings.
