Plain-bellied Watersnake

spp. Copper-bellied Watersnake

Latin Name:
Nerodia erythrogaster neglecta

The word Nerodia is likely derived from greek mythology (the sea nymph Nereis). The name erythrogaster comes from the red belly of N. e. erythrogaster (red-bellied watersnake). The name neglecta, meaning neglected, signifies that the copperbellied watersnake was not recognized as a subspecies for quite some time.

Description:

Juveniles are banded, unlike the adults. The banding has a redish-brown tinge to it.
